Brixton Hill Wesleyan Church had a humble beginning - in a cottage on Cold Harbour Lane.  In 1824, the first chapel was built, with a membership of about 40.  In 1856 this building was taken down and a new chapel and schoolroom were built.  In 1874 the old school premises in the rear of the building were demolished to make room for a lecture hall, school and classrooms.  It’s interesting to note that income from pew rents reached a high water mark of over £600 in 1881!

The church tragically lost members during both world wars, and the church itself was bombed on the night of Saturday the 26th of October 1940.  Fortunately, the adjoining school premises were saved.  Thanks to the contributions and efforts of many people, the foundation stone of the new church was laid in March 1957.  Since this time, the church has seen many changes, and today, the church reflects the community of Christ around the world, with many members hailing from the Caribbean and West Africa.

The church has an active membership, with people volunteering their time to serve on the various Ministry teams:  Stewards, Music & Worship, Hospitality, Cleaning, Property, Pastoral Visitors, Sunday School  & Youth, Refugees’ Welcome, and the Robes Homeless Ministry.   Many members are involved in charities and community work both here in the UK and abroad.  The church is in the process of a development scheme, to make the building a better place “to serve the present age, our callings to fulfil.”   The church shares space with Lily’s Day Nursery as well as the New Bridge Prison Befriending Charity.
